PATRON: Her Majesty The Queen
The Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) is the soldiers’ charity. It provides financial and practical support to soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need.

The ABF works in partnership with Regimental and Corps Benevolent Funds and in co-operation with other Service charities. They identify and investigate eligible cases in "real need" and provide them with financial support.

Dependent on voluntary donations, the ABF must currently raise around £5.5 million each year to continue its vital work with members of the Army Family. The need shows no sign of abating, and with an exponential growth in cases expected the ABF's need for public financial support is greater than ever.

The Fund provides support in two ways. About half of the money raised each year supports individual cases of need and half supports charities which provide for the special needs of the Army community.

Grants to individuals
The ABF gives financial support to individuals through Regimental and Corps Benevolent Funds. This is usually an ABF grant to supplement whatever the Regiment or Corps has the resource to provide. The need can range from an electric wheelchair for a soldier's disabled son or a stair lift for an injured former soldier to care home fees for a Second World War veteran or a much needed holiday for a war widow and her young children.

Grants to charities
The ABF also makes substantial financial grants to charitable organisations which provide for the special needs of the Army Family. These are given on behalf of all Regiments and Corps of the Army.
